Band Coaching

Groove, Jazz & Modern Styles

Ready to take your playing from the practice room to the stage? Master the pocket and dive deep into the sounds of Jamiroquai and Neo-Soul. This high-energy coaching builds your groove, timing, and stage presence in a professional band setting.

This band coaching is aimed at advanced students of a music school with at least 2–3 years of experience on an instrument or in singing, who want to work in a band playing groove-based music. The focus is on jazz, funk, groove, and hip-hop-inspired styles, drawing inspiration from artists and bands such as Jamiroquai, Louis Cole, A Tribe Called Quest, and Kiefer.

Participants will work together on ensemble playing, timing, feel, and sound—always based on their own repertoire or stylistically suitable songs. The workshop is highly practical: band rehearsals, targeted groove exercises, modern rhythm concepts, and arrangement techniques are at the core. The goal is to build musical confidence, strengthen individual expression, and shape a cohesive musical statement as a band.

Topics Covered:

  • Groove, timing & pocket in a band context
  • Styles: Jazz-Funk, Neo-Soul, Hip-Hop & Modern Jazz
  • Rhythm concepts (feel, subdivision, layering)
  • Arrangements & song structure
  • Band communication & efficient rehearsal techniques
  • Sound & dynamics
  • Individual feedback for both bands and solo musicians

Requirements:

At least 2-3 years of playing an instrument or singing experience, basic rhythmic skills, and an interest in modern, groove-oriented music.

Teacher

  • Anthony Malka

    Anthony Malka

A French-keyboardist, composer and educator based in Neukölln since 2007 and who created the musical persona Le Commandant Couche‑Tôt to explore a visually-inflected, groove-laden sonic world. Rooted in the French keyboard tradition of artists like Chassol and General Elektriks, and inspired by cinematic composers such as François de Roubaix and Serge Gainsbourg, Malka weaves together funk, disco, Brazilian rhythms and dreamy textures in his music. Under the Le Commandant Couche-Tôt alias, Anthony crafts immersive tracks each paired with a visual universe evocative of filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Terry Gilliam, creating a distinctive blend of sound and image.

His toured Europe with his former band and released songs that have been aired worldwide on major Radio stations.

In short, Anthony Malka is a multi-talented musician whose alter-ego offers a rich fusion of keyboard virtuosity, rhythmic exploration and visual storytelling.

    Course

An experienced educator he teaches piano, keyboards, songwriting and production with a focus in jazz, funk, brazilian grooves that he shares with a wide audience of students from beginners, to new starters or more advanced pianists.

He proposes a tailored approach to keep the motivation and the pleasure of the student always  vivid.

Rhythm practice is at the heart of his curriculum through reading exercises, body percussion patterns and games. Anthony Malka would also like to offer band coaching sessions to small ensembles of musicians with a minimum of 2 years of instrument experience (bass, guitar, drums, horns, keyboards) where the students can learn to listen and interplay with others based on songs from the jazz and funk repertoire (Jamiroquai, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Louis Cole etc.) Recording sessions and production with Ableton Live would be another workshop he would like to propose to the students of the Global Music Academy
